Collage
Workshops
Roberta Arenson conducts collage workshops for all age levels — K–12 as
well as adults.
Collage is an exciting way to go about making art. Even
those just starting out can find unexpected delights in creating pictures
of cut or torn papers.
Format: A collage workshop begins with an introduction of the
artist and an autobiography of how she became involved in illustrating
children's books and working in the technique of collage. Ms.
Arenson displays pictures from her own books as examples, and demonstrates
how to go about making a collage picture using the audience to help the
process along. The students/participants then spend the majority of
the workshop making their own collage pictures, with active coaching from
the artist.
Length: A regularly scheduled class period is sufficient time
for a collage art session.
Supplies: A collage workshop primarily uses basic art
supplies found in most schools. Materials to have on hand would be
glue sticks, Elmer’s glue, scissors, white paper, and colored paper.
These materials can be provided by the artist for an extra fee. With
advance notice it's also nice to encourage the gathering of old magazines,
papers, and unusual materials such as buttons, 3D objects, and wallpaper
samples to add to the collages.
